History of our Branches
Kingston Unity is one of the few remaining Friendly Societies that still operate with Branches. Historically these were formed to cater for the needs of individuals with a common link such as where they lived or a particular trade or profession but now they are open to all who wish to join. In the early days membership of a Branch or Lodge was much sought after and individuals had to take part in an initiation ceremony before being accepted. The sickness and death benefits available were important when no other assistance was provided to the working man and the social aspect of the regular meetings was also highly valued.
Following the introduction of the welfare state the importance of membership declined but it still provided many with regular social activity and a supplement to state benefits and long term savings. Our Branches today still have their own specific schemes that provide health and life benefits, each one giving slightly different terms around the same basic policy as each Branch is run by and for its own members.
If you would like to know more about Branch membership please contact the Branch Secretary from the details shown in the Location list.
